Driver Education

Click here for the Owen's Foundation Driver's Education Grant

The goal of the Driver's Education program is to teach young people to be safe and responsible drivers. To achieve this goal, the CAIU offers Classroom Instruction and Behind-the-Wheel Instruction as part of the driver education services.

Classroom Instruction
The Driver’s Education classroom course is now offered on-line. Enrollment for the 30-hour course is simple: just log on to www.caiu.keystodriving.com. Students can complete the course requirements at a pace suitable for their schedule. Upon completion of the course, a certificate will be issued to the student. The on-line Driver’s Education course is approved by the PA Department of Education and the PA Department of Transportation.

Behind-the-Wheel Instruction
The learning experiences presented through practice driving in a real car in everyday traffic are experiences necessary to develop a safe and efficient driver. CAIU offers two options for Behind-the-Wheel instruction.

Option 1
The learning experiences presented through practice-driving in a real car in
everyday traffic are experiences necessary to develop a safe and efficient
driver.
This option allows students to participate in the Behind-the-Wheel (BTW)
training provided by the CAIU. The students/families are obligated to pay the
applicable fee.
- Service provided at various locations, depending on the district
- Schedule varies according to availability of the students
- BTW instruction occurs in 1-hour increments
- 6 hours of instruction are required.

Option 2
The learning experiences presented through practice-driving in a real car in
everyday traffic are experiences necessary to develop a safe and efficient
driver.
This option involves a written contract with an individual school district. The
district agrees to pay for a portion or all of the Behind-the-Wheel training
(varies by district) provided by CAIU employees to the eligible students in that
district. Currently, only the Halifax Area, Millersburg Area, and Northern York
County School Districts participate in this option.
- Service typically provided at the contracting district’s site
- Schedule varies according to availability of the students and district
requirements
- BTW instruction occurs in 1-hour increments
- 6 hours of instruction are required
Final PennDot driver license skills testing is available to students served
under these contracts, additional requirements apply.

For either option:

  • Schedule varies according to availability of the students
  • BTW instruction occurs in 1-hour increments
  • 6 hours of instruction are required

* Special note to parents and students regarding current program waiting list lead times
At present, student interest and participation in our program is running at a very high volume.  Upon receipt of a student's paid registration form, it is likely that they will not hear from an instructor for about 12 to 14 weeks to begin scheduling behind-the-wheel sessions.  While this lead time is long, it does give students plenty of time to begin logging their required hours of behind-the-wheel experience with parents.  Additionally, if they have not taken a classroom drivers education course in school, it also gives them time to complete our 30-hour classroom theory course which is highly recommended.

** Recent updates to the driver education program by PennDot effective September 1, 2017
We will no longer be allowed to provide final skills testing to students from school districts who do not directly contract for driver education services with the CAIU(Students enrolling in option 1).
